GRADUATION PROJECT

The Graduation Project was adopted as a requirement for graduation by the Wilkes County Board of Education on June 8, 2009. It is a cross-curricular culmination of knowledge and skills acquired by students throughout their years of education. The topic of the Graduation Project depends on the student. Each student will design his or her own project based on an area of interest. Once a topic is chosen and a proposal has been submitted to and accepted by the school’s Graduation Project Advisory Committee, the student is free to begin planning and completing his or her project. The Graduation Project has four components. These are often referred to as the four Ps:
  • Paper: This is a research paper which relates to the student's Graduation Project topic in a clearly discernible way.
  • Project hours: These hours consist of the time spent creating the project product or the hours spent job shadowing/volunteering. Students are required to spend at least 15 hours on this project.
  • Portfolio: The portfolio is completed by the student as he/she completes his/her project hours.
  • Presentation: Upon successful completion of the paper, project hours, and portfolio (submitted and received a passing grade), the student will design and deliver a 6-minute presentation before a panel of judges (consisting of teachers, parents, community members, business leaders, etc.)

Students must pass all four components to successfully complete the Graduation Project requirements.
